DR. GRETA PENNELL

Indianapolis, Indiana
Central Chapter

My love for the outdoors and art was instilled at a very early age by my parents, especially my father, who encouraged me to dream big and develop my talents as an artist, naturalist, environmentalist, and educator. In pursuit of those dreams I completed a B.S. in Zoology from Iowa State University, two education masters degrees while teaching science in Indiana and Massachusetts and ultimately a masters and PhD in Developmental Psychology from Rutgers University that led to my current position as Professor of Teacher Education at the University of Indianapolis.

From my first foray into photography as a young girl armed with my Kodak Brownie, photography has been one of my preferred modes of creative expression. In my photography I strive to do as little post-production, computer-based corrections to my images as possible. My artistic endeavors also include pen & ink illustrations and non-toxic intaglio printmaking.

Regardless of medium my focus is generally on the wonders of nature and its intersection with human activity. My formal training in biological illustration and zoology informs my work in that my eye is drawn to the tiny details and patterns of flora and fauna. It is this too easily taken for granted beauty that I seek to capture as a reminder that even common or seemingly mundane wildlife merit our attention because through them we are all connected.
